Patients Coming Off Slimming Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using these drugs should be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a intense return of appetite.

"It was like something that goes on and you become starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
