Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
