Roughly fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.

Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.

Police state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored liquid.

The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they added.

Law enforcement then discovered numerous other marked cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement report early analysis indicate the fluid was likely blood from a person.

"At present there remains no lead as to its source; officials are presently not aware of any physical harm in relation with the event," they stated.

City officials announced they were trying "to resolve the case" and have asked to the community for tips.

A high-ranking representative stated the incident left him stunned and needed to be resolved promptly.

"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on social media, recalling the death of nine people by a gunman targeting people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
